Natlan Archon Quest Walkthrough: Chapter V Full Story Guide, All Boss Fights & Nightsoul Combat Tips (5.0-5.5)
I finished the Natlan Archon Quest at 3am and just sat there processing what happened. Chapter V is the best storytelling HoYoverse has done since Sumeru, and I say that as someone who thought Fontaine's courtroom drama was peak Genshin writing. The Natlan story does something the other regions haven't: it makes you care about the war.
This walkthrough covers the major story beats, boss encounters, and the mechanics you need to understand to not get stuck. I'll avoid detailed plot spoilers where I can, but some discussion of boss fights and late-game mechanics is unavoidable.
The setup: Natlan before you arrive
When the Traveler reaches Natlan in Version 5.0 on August 28, 2024, the nation is already at war. The Abyss has been invading for centuries, corrupting the ley lines and creating a parallel dimension called the Night Kingdom where fallen warriors' souls linger. The Pyro Archon Mavuika has been fighting this war for 500 years through a cycle of death and resurrection tied to the Sacred Flame.
This is important because it explains why Natlan's mechanics work the way they do. Nightsoul's Blessing, the combat state exclusive to Natlan characters, is literally the power of the Night Kingdom being channeled through living warriors. Phlogiston, the orange energy resource, is concentrated memories and willpower from the dead. The game doesn't spell this out in a tutorial popup, but it's embedded in the world quests and artifact lore descriptions.
Natlan sits west of Sumeru's Desert of Hadramaveth, and the terrain reflects its Nation of War identity: volcanic landscapes, hot springs, sheer canyons, and cliffs. The six tribes each occupy distinct biomes within this map.
Act I and Act II: the Pilgrimage
The Archon Quest kicks off with the Pilgrimage of the Sacred Flame, a tournament where warriors from the six tribes compete for the right to challenge the Abyss directly. This is where you meet Kachina from the Children of Echoes (Nanatzcayan) and get introduced to the tribal politics.
Kachina's character arc across these first two acts is worth paying attention to. She starts as an underdog who everyone doubts, and her growth mirrors the player's own progression from confused newcomer to competent combatant. She's also given to you as a free character after this chapter, and building her is worthwhile because her Turbo Twirly drill provides consistent Geo application that helps against the Abyss shields you'll face throughout the rest of the quest.
The first major boss fight is against an Abyss Lector variant unique to Natlan. It has a Pyro shield that takes reduced damage from everything except Hydro and reactions. Bring a Hydro character. Bring two if you can. Xingqiu or Yelan are ideal because their off-field Hydro application breaks the shield faster than on-field options. The boss also summons Abyss portals that spawn smaller enemies. Ignore them and focus the boss. The portals despawn when the boss's shield breaks.
Act III and IV: uniting the tribes
This is where the story opens up. You travel to each of the six tribes to recruit their heroes for the final battle. The Children of Echoes section is in the underground caverns beneath Nanatzcayan. The Scions of the Canopy section takes place in the treetop village of Huitztlan. The People of the Springs section involves Koholasaurus water traversal through the hot springs of Meztli.
Each tribal chapter unlocks that tribe's Saurian Indwelling ability, and the quests are designed to force you to use them. The Masters of the Night-Wind questline (Mictlan) involves the Iktomisaurus spirit-sight mechanic to reveal hidden paths. I got stuck for about 20 minutes because I didn't realize a certain wall was illusory and needed the spirit-sight to see through.
Mavuika's 500-year plan is revealed in Act IV. Without getting into spoilers, it involves a sacrifice that reframes every interaction you've had with her up to that point. The writing here is genuinely strong. Pay attention to the dialogue about Ancient Names and the Ode of Resurrection. Those concepts become mechanically relevant in the final act.
The Flower-Feather Clan (Tlalocan) and Collective of Plenty (Teteocan) territories were added in later patches. Tlalocan arrived in Version 5.2 (November 2024), and Teteocan in Version 5.5 (March 2025). If you're playing through the Archon Quest now, all six tribes are available.
Act V: the final battle
The final act of the Natlan Archon Quest is the longest single quest chain in Genshin Impact history. It took me about 4 hours from start to finish with voiced dialogue on auto-play. The boss gauntlet at the end has multiple phases and you'll need a well-built team.
The final boss fight involves the Abyss's corruption of Natlan's ley lines manifesting as a gigantic entity: the Lord of Eroded Primal Fire. Phase one is a standard damage check. Phase two introduces a mechanic where certain characters are temporarily removed from your party, which forces you to use the trial characters HoYoverse provides. The trial characters are well-built enough to clear the fight, so don't panic if your main DPS gets taken.
Phase three introduces a Nightsoul Transmission sequence where you switch between multiple Natlan characters in rapid succession. The timing is generous. Just follow the on-screen prompts.
There's also a moment involving a certain Fatui Harbinger that I won't spoil. What I will say is that his sacrifice permanently changes the state of Natlan's ley lines, which is reflected in the post-quest world state. You can revisit certain locations after Act V and see physical changes to the environment.
Practical tips for the Archon Quest
Bring a healer. Not a shielder, a healer. Several boss phases have damage-over-time effects that bypass shields. Bennett or Kokomi are ideal. Xilonen with a DEF build also works since her burst heals the active character.
Level your characters to at least 80 before attempting Act V. The level scaling in the final dungeon is aggressive and you'll feel underpowered at level 70 even with good artifacts.
Don't skip the optional dialogue with tribe members between acts. The game tracks which side conversations you've had and references them in the finale. It's not major, but it adds context that makes the ending hit harder.
The Archon Quest rewards include several Fragile Resin, a Crown of Insight, and enough Primogems for roughly 10 pulls. Not amazing, but the real reward is unlocking the weekly boss domain, which drops talent materials for Mavuika and the other Natlan 5-stars.
Post-quest: what changes and what doesn't
After Act V, the Night Kingdom ley lines stabilize. You'll notice the skybox changes in certain areas. The reddish Abyss tint fades from the northern territories and the Phlogiston Spiritways glow brighter. It's a nice touch. Shows HoYoverse actually thought about the world state after the story ends.
But mechanically, a few things unlock that aren't obvious. The Flower-Feather Clan territory opens up fully. Before Act V, about half the floating islands are blocked by Abyss barriers. After, they're all accessible. There's a luxurious chest on the easternmost island that you can see from the first time you enter Natlan but can't reach until post-quest. Frustrating. But the chest has a Northlander billet, which feels like a reasonable apology.
The Collective of Plenty territory, added in Version 5.5, has its own post-quest narrative thread that ties into the Ancient Name system. There's a side quest near the Teteocan settlement that rewards a free 4-star weapon blueprint, and it's genuinely decent. Not just collection fodder.
I also found that certain Abyss enemy spawns in the overworld are permanently gone after Act V. The regular tribal warrior enemies and wildlife take their place. If you're farming Abyss drops for weapon ascension, do it before finishing the quest. Or farm them from the Spiral Abyss, but overworld is faster.
And one thing that tripped me up: the weekly boss domain is in an underground cave beneath the Stadium of the Sacred Flame, marked by a purple portal on the minimap. The portal doesn't appear until you've completed Act V AND the world quest "Echoes of the Fallen." I wandered around the Stadium for 15 minutes looking for it. The world quest giver is near the Stadium's eastern entrance, by the way.
Oh, and the Tribal Chronicles system. Each tribe has a 3-act questline that replaces traditional Story Quests in Natlan. They're marked with blue quest icons near each tribal settlement. Completing all three acts for a tribe gives 4 reputation levels worth of rewards. Do them between Archon Quest acts. The stories tie together.
