Genshin Impact Natlan Beginner Guide 2026: First 10 Hours, Free Kachina Build, Saurian Indwelling & Phlogiston Tips

2026-06-05·Getting Started

I started a second account to see what the Natlan new-player experience actually feels like with zero resources and no built characters from other regions. Some things surprised me. Some things frustrated me. Here's what I wish I'd known going in.

Natlan is the sixth of Teyvat's seven nations, released August 28, 2024 as Version 5.0. You can access it at Adventure Rank 28 using the Quick Start feature, or naturally through the Archon Quest progression. The region sits west of Sumeru's Desert of Hadramaveth and it's enormous. Bigger than Sumeru's rainforest and desert combined, honestly.

The first thing you should do after arriving

Ignore the Archon Quest marker for 10 minutes and unlock the Statue of the Seven near the Stadium of the Sacred Flame. Then teleport to the nearest high point and glide in a spiral to reveal as much of the map as possible. The Natlan map is enormous. I didn't believe the size comparisons until I glided for two full stamina bars and still hadn't revealed the northern border.

The reason to unlock map visibility early is that Natlan's waypoints are connected by Phlogiston Spiritways, which are glowing orange liquid paths in the sky. You can't see the Spiritways on a blacked-out map, and without them, traveling between waypoints takes forever because the terrain is vertical cliffs and lava rivers that you can't cross without specific mechanics.

The six tribes each control a different region: People of the Springs (Meztli) in the south with hot springs, Children of Echoes (Nanatzcayan) underground, Scions of the Canopy (Huitztlan) in the treetops, Masters of the Night-Wind (Mictlan) in the northwest, Flower-Feather Clan (Tlalocan) on the floating islands, and Collective of Plenty (Teteocan) in the east. Knowing these names helps when quest markers just show a tribal logo.

Claim Kachina immediately

After the first Archon Quest chapter, you get Kachina for free from the event menu. Don't leave her sitting at level 1. She's a Geo polearm character from the Children of Echoes who rides a drill called Turbo Twirly. It sounds silly. It is silly. It also deals surprisingly good damage against the shielded Abyss enemies that are everywhere in early Natlan.

And honestly, Kachina's real value for a new account is that she can activate Coilgrass Sigils, which are those orange vine bridges that appear near cliffs. Without a Natlan character in your party, Coilgrass Sigils don't activate. You can technically bypass them with careful climbing and gliding, but it adds minutes to every traversal. With Kachina in the party, you just walk up and they activate.

Build her as cheaply as possible at first. Throw any DEF% artifacts on her. Don't worry about set bonuses yet. Give her the White Tassel 3-star polearm from Liyue chests because it has a Crit Rate substat and you probably have it at Refinement 5 without ever noticing.

Phlogiston: the resource that gates early Natlan

Phlogiston is the orange bar that appears above your HP bar when you're controlling a Natlan character. It has a maximum of 100 points (increased by 10 per Statue of the Seven level, to 200 at level 10) and it depletes when you use Saurian Indwelling abilities or Nightsoul Transmission. You refill it by collecting Phlogiston crystals, those glowing orange rocks near waypoints and spiritways.

In the early game, Phlogiston management is the difference between smooth exploration and constant frustration. You run out of Phlogiston mid-climb and your character falls. You run out mid-swim and you get dumped into lava.

But here's the trick: treat Phlogiston crystals like stamina. Don't use Phlogiston abilities unless you can see the next crystal within 30 meters. The crystals respawn every few minutes, so you can loop between two of them indefinitely. The area around the Children of Echoes settlement has about 8 crystals in a tight cluster, which makes it a good spot to practice Saurian Indwelling without running out of resource.

Saurian Indwelling: which ones matter early

You unlock Saurian types as you progress through the tribes, but the first three you get are the most generally useful.

Tepetlisaurus lets you burrow underground through soft terrain. This is how you access about 40% of the underground caves in Natlan. The burrow points are marked with cracked ground that glows slightly. If you're trying to reach a teleport waypoint and the path dead-ends at a cliff, look for cracked ground nearby.

Yumkasaurus gives a grappling hook that pulls you toward terrain or enemies. The range is generous. You can chain multiple grapples in mid-air by releasing and re-grabbing before the animation ends. This is the fastest way to traverse vertical terrain in the early game, before you unlock Qucusaurus flight.

Koholasaurus lets you swim through liquid Phlogiston, which is the orange stuff in rivers and pools. It's not water. You can't swim in it without indwelling. Falling into it without Koholasaurus active deals rapid damage. The People of the Springs territory (Meztli) is designed around Koholasaurus traversal, so you'll get plenty of practice there.

The other three types unlock later: Qucusaurus for flying through Phlogiston Wind Tunnels (Flower-Feather Clan territory), Iktomisaurus for revealing hidden objects with spirit sight (Masters of the Night-Wind territory), and Tatankasaurus for charging through breakable walls (Collective of Plenty territory).

Your first artifact domain run

Once you hit Adventure Rank 45, go straight to the Sanctum of Rainbow Spirits domain. It's northwest of the Stadium, in the Masters of the Night-Wind territory (Mictlan). This single domain drops both Obsidian Codex and Scroll of the Hero of Cinder City, which together cover every Natlan character in the game.

Don't farm artifacts before AR 45. I know it's tempting. The drop rates below AR 45 give you 4-star artifacts that you'll replace within a week. Just use whatever the bosses and chests give you until then.

For your first domain runs, bring a Hydro character to break the Pyro shields on the domain enemies. Barbara works fine and she's free. Xingqiu is better if you have him. The enemies hit fairly hard for a domain, so bring a healer or shielder. Noelle is a solid free option because her shield gives you time to learn the enemy attack patterns.

A team that works with what you have

If you're starting fresh in Natlan with only free characters, the team I'd recommend is: Kachina as your on-field driver, Xiangling from Spiral Abyss floor 3 for Pyro application, Barbara for healing and Hydro application, and whoever you pulled from the beginner banner as your flex slot.

This team triggers Vaporize from Xiangling and Barbara, provides shields from crystallize reactions with Kachina's Geo application, and gives you access to Coilgrass Sigils and Saurian Indwelling through Kachina's Nightsoul state.

It's not a meta Abyss team. It will clear all overworld content and world bosses without issue, which is all you need in your first 10 hours. You can worry about Spiral Abyss optimization after you've finished the Archon Quest and built up some artifact sets.

If you have any Primogems from launch rewards or the current patch, I'd spend them on the Mavuika banner if she's available, or Mualani if she's the current rate-up. Both are strong main DPS characters who carry their own weight from C0 with craftable weapons. Don't pull for constellations or signature weapons on a new account. New characters expand your team options more than constellations improve existing ones.

One last thing. Natlan is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, iOS, and Android. The Xbox version launched alongside 5.0. If you're on Xbox and new to the game entirely, the cross-save with mobile is genuinely useful for spending resin during lunch breaks.
